Roger A. Maduro is a leading pioneer and expert in the use of open solutions in the enterprise as well as in the healthcare environment. In 1997, as systems architect for Winstar Telecommunications, he designed and carried out an far seeing project to demonstrate the feasibility of running the enterprise on Linux and open source. Three years later the projects he led had achieved multiple successes and Linux and other open source packages were running large number of Winstar offices as well as in the data centers. This was one of the most advanced deployments of open source in the world at the time. In 2001 Mr. Maduro started focusing his work on providing open source-based solutions in the healthcare industry. In 2004 he was the primary author of a white paper for the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on potential open source strategies for the VA. He has been active in the VistA community since 2003 and was a founding member and board member of the VistA Software Alliance (VSA). He is presently a member of the board of Open Health Tools. He publishes a newsletter, VistA and Open Healthcare News that tracks the rise of open source in the healthcare industry.
