Open Source in Public Safety and Healthcare
Open source is playing a leading role in solving data collection and
distribution problems in the healthcare field. Our panelists will provide an
overview of some of these solutions as well as an outline of how they benefit
patients. The open source VistA electronic health record system, developed
over the past thirty years by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, is being
successfully deployed at clinics and hospitals all across the U.S. as well as
foreign countries. The Kingdom of Jordan is in the middle of an ambitious
program to implement VistA in the entire country. Obstacles to the exchange of
medical records and critical care information are being overcome by the open
source CONNECT project. A medical module for an open source corrections
offender management system that was developed through a 14 state consortium
will be unveiled during the conference.
